The Fitzies! Are Mike, Mel, Ben and Caitie
Fitzhugh, who re-located in 2003 to Holmhill in Grantown-on-Spey.
Holmhill was one of a trio of houses in
the town built for the daughters of the Earl of Seafield,
in 1895. All three properties are distinguishable by the baronial
crow-stepped roofs at the front.
Holmhill then became a hotel in the 1930s
and remained so, on and off, until it was purchased by the
Multiple Sclerosis Society and officially opened as a holiday
centre by
HRH Prince Charles in 1983. Major changes were made to the
property at that time and the large modern rear extension
was added in 1999. Unfortunately, the Multiple Sclerosis Society
closed the centre approximately one year before we purchased
it in 2003, so it lay empty and neglected during that time.
We, however, were immediately struck by
its beautiful location and views and also by the fantastic
interior with huge rooms and original cornicing, so we undertook
a major refurbishment which has seen the property come back
to life as our family home. |
